The Bain TestGorilla assessment is an online screening test that a growing number of Bain offices send to candidates between the CV screen and the first-round interview. It runs on TestGorilla, an assessment platform used by many employers, and it is a different animal from the Bain SOVA gamified assessment that other offices use. Where the Test Sits in Bain's Process

Bain does not publish its screening process, and the format genuinely varies by office and by recruiting season. Candidate reports describe a multiple-choice test of roughly 30 to 45 minutes, taken at home with the webcam on, made up of several short timed modules. Numerical reasoning appears in nearly every reported version; critical thinking, data interpretation, and business judgment modules appear in many. Some offices still use SOVA instead, and some use no online test at all.

Two practical consequences follow. First, treat your invitation email as the authority on what you will actually sit: it names the modules and the total time. Second, do not skip preparation because the test looks short. A weak score ends your application before anyone reads your cover letter, and the time pressure is the real difficulty.

How the Test Runs

The mechanics matter more here than in most tests, because they punish the unprepared in specific ways.

  • Short modules, separate clocks. Each module has its own countdown and auto-submits when time runs out, keeping whatever you have answered. Pacing resets with every module.
  • Forward only. Within a module you move one question at a time and cannot go back. A skipped question is gone.
  • No penalty for wrong answers. Because a wrong answer costs nothing, an unanswered question is always worse than a guess. When the clock is tight, pick the best remaining option and move on.
  • Practice questions first. Modules typically open with a handful of unscored practice questions. They are the only place where the answer and the reasoning appear immediately, so treat them as free calibration, not as a formality to click through.
  • No calculator. The arithmetic is built to be done in your head or on paper.

Expect something in the range of 45 to 60 seconds per question. The questions themselves are rarely hard in isolation; the binding constraint is the clock.

Skill Family 1: Critical Thinking

The critical thinking questions rotate through a small set of recurring logical forms. Recognising the form is most of the work.

  • Syllogisms: given two premises, decide what must follow. Treat the premises as true even when they sound absurd, and reject any conclusion that is merely plausible rather than forced.
  • Statement relationships: does a second statement contradict, support, restate, or simply not bear on the first? Restating a claim in different words adds no evidence, and this distinction is tested constantly.
  • Rules and applications: given a rule, decide whether a case obeys it and whether the outcome matches what the rule predicts. These are two separate questions; candidates lose points by collapsing them into one.
  • Assumptions: identify the unstated premise an argument depends on.
  • Strengthen and weaken: decide what a new fact does to an argument.

The most common single error is reversing a rule: "all X are Y" does not give you "all Y are X". The second most common is denying the antecedent: if success triggers an outcome, failure tells you nothing about whether the outcome occurred.

Skill Family 2: Numerical Reasoning and Data

The numerical questions mix clean computation with judgment about data. Percentage work, growth rates, and sequences sit alongside reading tables and charts. A third strand tests data literacy: what a figure does and does not allow you to conclude.

The traps are predictable and worth naming.

  • Percentage changes on different bases: a rise of 20 percent followed by a fall of 25 percent is not a fall of 5 percent.
  • Reading a share as a volume: a channel can grow every quarter and still lose share if the total market grows faster.
  • Over-concluding from a chart: extrapolating past the last data point, or comparing revenue when only units are shown.
  • Mean against median, and averages taken over columns that should not be averaged.

If this list feels familiar, it should: these are exactly the habits Bain interviewers test again in live cases when they hand you an exhibit. The screen is a cheap, scalable preview of the case interview itself.

How to Prepare

Two weeks of focused work is enough for most candidates.

  1. Drill the logical forms until they are automatic. Syllogisms and rule-application questions reward pattern recognition, not brilliance. Ten minutes a day beats a weekend cram.
  2. Rebuild no-calculator arithmetic. Percentages, ratios, and growth rates at speed, on paper. Set a 50-second timer per question and hold it.
  3. Practise the mechanics, not just the content. Forward-only navigation and per-module clocks change how you should behave: answer everything, guess fast, never park on a hard item.
  4. Sit at least one full timed simulation before the real thing, so the pacing is a habit rather than a discovery.
